A 21st Century Kitchen Update in a 1940’s Home in Wauwatosa, WI

There are remodels, and then there are rescues. This 1940’s home had been through a few kitchen “updates” over the years—think a 1970’s redo, some vinyl flooring thrown down in the 80’s, and track lighting in the 90’s. The result? A space that had more band-aids than actual solutions. Cabinets that wouldn’t close, a refrigerator that forced everyone to shuffle sideways from the dining room, and a general vibe of “functional… ish.”

The homeowners loved their house but knew it was time for a real transformation—one that would bring their kitchen into the 21st century while respecting the character of their 1940’s home.

The Space Problem

The biggest challenge wasn’t in the kitchen itself, but in the wasted space right next to it. Two oversized closets—stuffed with coats, shoes, and who-knows-what—took up prime real estate. Meanwhile, the kitchen remained cramped and awkward. The dream was an open, bright kitchen that flowed naturally with the rest of the home.

Unfortunately, in a 1940’s house, central walls tend to carry more than just charm. Most were either load-bearing or packed with mechanicals. So, instead of tearing down everything, the solution came from a smarter direction: reclaiming the adjacent closet space.

The New Plan

Removing the closets was a game changer. Suddenly, the kitchen could breathe. Countertops could finally stretch where they were needed—flanking the range, surrounding the refrigerator, and carving out generous prep zones. A new eat-in counter with stools was added, perfect for quick meals, coffee breaks, or supervising homework while stirring a pot of soup.

And this counter isn’t just a pretty face. It’s versatile enough to serve as a prep station, buffet line, bar, or decorative display. (It’s also the perfect perch for midnight snacks, though that part didn’t make it onto the blueprint.)

The Look

With the structure reimagined, the finishes had their chance to shine. The flooring was replaced with luxury vinyl tile that blends tones of light and dark gray, mimicking distressed bleached wood. The cabinetry followed a two-tone palette: lighter gray wall cabinets and darker gray base cabinets, giving the kitchen depth and sophistication.

Lighting, once an afterthought solved with clunky track fixtures, is now layered and purposeful. Recessed ceiling lights and under-cabinet LEDs bathe the entire kitchen in an even glow, no shadows left behind.

One clever touch: modifying the floating upper cabinet around the windows. By adjusting the depth and height of the cabinetry near the casings, the kitchen gained both character and balance—a thoughtful nod to the quirks of older homes.

Personal Touches

This wasn’t just about efficiency—it was about personality. The homeowner had one non-negotiable: a backsplash in her favorite shade of blue. Custom-ordered tile now frames the range, bringing a pop of color and joy into the space.

Inside the cabinets, customization rules. From door-mounted spice racks to roll-out trays, every inch is designed for easy organization. No more mystery drawers or unreachable corners—this kitchen is built for living.

The Result

The once-cramped, outdated kitchen is now an open, efficient, and beautiful hub of the home. With smart storage, versatile counter space, modern finishes, and a splash of personality, it’s proof that even a 1940’s house can embrace the 21st century—without losing its soul.

The only thing left outdated? Those old closets. Retired, permanently.
