S 106th St Greenfield Kitchen – 5 Star Kitchen Gold Award

Some kitchens age gracefully, like a fine wine. Others… more like milk. This front-of-the-house kitchen had fallen into the latter category. The once-proud oak cabinets were dated, the hinges were giving up one by one, and the appliances worked only when they felt like it. The only major light source came from an outdated cabinet-and-lighting contraption floating over the island like a boxy chandelier. And yes, there were even operable shutters above the sink—a quaint 1970s touch that the homeowners were more than ready to retire.

The couple didn’t want to reinvent the kitchen footprint but did want to give it new life, better function, and a brighter, more modern feel. With a combination of smart design tweaks and elegant finishes, the result is a kitchen that’s not only stylish but also perfectly tuned to how they live today.

Light, Bright, and Functional

The first order of business was improving the lighting. Gone is the heavy box over the island. In its place, chic matte gold pendants add warmth and sparkle. Recessed ceiling lights and under-cabinet lighting ensure that every inch of counter space is properly illuminated. Even the marble mosaic backsplash got in on the action, bouncing light around the room while framing the opening into the family room. No more shutters—just airy openness, with asymmetry made charming by a mix of cabinetry and open shelving.

A Kitchen with Character

The new cabinets, custom painted in a soft “alabaster” white, strike the perfect balance between crisp and cozy—without the sterile feel of stark white. Mixed metals—matte gold hardware and stainless steel appliances—add a touch of glamour without being flashy. The island, a centerpiece of the remodel, is now cherry wood with an onyx stain, creating depth and contrast. Seating was smartly shifted to the sides, making room for four stools and plenty of casual conversation.

  • Shallow drawers were added to the eating side of the island—perfect for napkins, coasters, or a deck of cards.
  • A wider countertop allows more prep, serving, and cooling space for pies.
  • Side panels reach the floor for a clean, built-in look.
  • A discreet outlet was tucked between drawers to meet code requirements.

Appliances and Storage Done Right

The outdated cooktop made way for a sleek new gas range with five burners. Above it, a cleverly compact micro/hood does the job without dominating the wall. The refrigerator stayed put but gained a whole new presence thanks to surrounding cabinetry, a pull-out pantry (the homeowner’s favorite feature), and a small crown molding detail that makes it look built-in.

Across the kitchen, shallow buffet-style cabinetry was added near the table, with alabaster uppers and onyx-stained lowers. Glass-front cabinets and under-cabinet lighting provide the perfect stage for dishes and artwork.

The Finished Space

Topped with clean quartz counters and tied together with a marble mosaic backsplash, the remodeled kitchen is brighter, more functional, and full of personality. It’s proof that you don’t need to knock down walls to achieve a dramatic transformation—sometimes you just need new cabinets, smarter storage, and the courage to say goodbye to 1970s shutters.
