Client Vision: From Dated to Distinctive
Our clients came to us with a vision—and a challenge. Their home, a charming Craftsman-style property in Hales Corners, had immense potential, but its heart—the kitchen and adjacent family room—felt disconnected, dim, and dated. The kitchen was cramped and closed off, the family room lacked architectural presence, and the overall layout did not support the flow or functionality they needed for modern family living.
Our Design Response
At AB&K, we approach every project with a balance of technical precision and creative design. This project was no different. Our primary goals were to:
- Open up the space between the kitchen and front of the house,
- Relocate structural elements to allow for seamless flow,
- Introduce custom cabinetry and millwork to elevate the aesthetic,
- And create a focal-point fireplace that feels timeless yet tailored.
Step 1: Structural Transformation
We began by removing the partition wall that divided the front half of the home. A load-bearing column was carefully relocated to ensure structural integrity while dramatically improving sightlines. This single move added nearly 3 feet of vertical space to the entry opening—bringing airiness and cohesion between rooms.
Step 2: Crafting the Fireplace Feature Wall
The family room’s fireplace previously lacked definition. Our solution was to design and fabricate a stunning custom built-in fireplace wall that serves as both a functional storage solution and a statement piece.
- The new design features a central fireplace flanked by glass-door display cabinetry above and closed cabinetry below—perfect for hiding media equipment and everyday items.
- We selected a subtle tile surround and a thick, craftsman-style mantel, which echo the home’s original architectural language while modernizing its expression.
Step 3: Cohesive Material Palette
Every finish was chosen with intention:
- Rich wood tones and painted finishes work in harmony.
- Clean lines reflect Craftsman roots without feeling heavy.
- Lighting and furniture selections were layered in to enhance warmth and livability.
The Result: Award-Winning Design That Lives Well
The final space is everything our clients envisioned and more: functional, inviting, and beautifully grounded in the character of the home. The transformation created not just a better room—but a better way of living in their space.
